H. Duke | Words That Create Distance

Have you heard of filter words? Also called distance words, these words put a distorting lens between the reader and the action of your writing. Author H. Duke warns against phrases like "she watched the snow fall" or "he thought she was pretty," which prevent us from experiencing the movement of the story firsthand.
