Mentoring Package

Would you like help evaluating and developing your manuscript, positioning it for the market, navigating the publishing process, and establishing your platform and career? Do you have great content but need to improve your prose?

What mentoring can do for you

A mentoring package gives you more access to the skills and experience I’ve gained over the many years I’ve been in this business:

  • high-level project development
  • book coaching and writing development
  • agent and publisher research
  • industry knowledge and contacts
  • theological knowledge, including a working knowledge of biblical Greek and Hebrew

You also benefit from having a team-member dedicated to helping you achieve your goals:

  • project accountability
  • a sounding board for new ideas and goals
  • weekly and monthly encouragement
  • resources to help you develop ideas and skill
  • recordings of mentoring and developmental meetings to back up your notes
  • project promotion
  • someone else keeping an eye out for opportunities to pitch your work, formally or informally, even after our direct work ends, up to a year from end of services

How packages work

Each package level consists of combinations of meeting blocks and editing/review blocks. I’ve set the blocks in place to give you a clear understanding of how much material I can review at the needed level in any month according to each package level.

Meetings blocks take place through the Video Conference app Zoom.

One editing/review block equals one of the following:

  • Up to† 20 mss pages—an overall critique with few in-manuscript notes
  • Up to† 8 mss pages—medium-level content or copyedit notes
  • Up to† 4 mss pages—detailed content or copyedit notes
  • A review of the structural outline, such as in a proposal or short chapter summary
  • Written feedback on content of each assigned worksheet for structural development, market research, craft development, etc.
  • About an hour answering your detailed email questions, doing market research for you, or creating an individualized resource guide.

† Each editing/review block is approximately an hour of work. While most meetings are also about an hour, meeting blocks take more overall time because of the preparation and follow-up work I do for your project needs. Therefore, the higher the number of meeting blocks in a month, the fewer total blocks in your package level for that month.

Nonfiction Editing

I offer four tiers of editing services for my nonfiction clients.

Manuscript critique

A manuscript critique gives you a broad assessment of the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses, pinpoints specific problem areas, and suggests options for improvement and development.

Developmental services

Developmental services help you advance your concept, outline, and draft. This service usually requires a combination of in-person or video meetings through Zoom as well as manuscript editing.

Content editing

Content editing focuses on clarifying ambiguities, correcting conceptual problems, and maintaining tone. I will identify problems with clarity and structure and point out concept-level problems such as unnecessary content or cloudy explanations.

Copyediting

My copyediting services are divided into three levels: basic, moderate, and line editing. The correct level for you depends on the status of your work. Copyediting includes correcting grammar, syntax, and style problems.

Fiction Editing

I offer a range of services to help you prepare your fiction manuscript for publication.

Manuscript critique

A manuscript evaluation involves a full read-through and my detailed critique as a representative reader. I will give you a broad assessment of the manuscript's strengths and weaknesses, and evaluate structure, premise, narrative plot(s), voice (style), and pacing. Use this service to know if you're on the right track for your drafting and revisions. It's a lighter option than a full content edit.

Content editing

Content editing refers to a closer look at the larger story. Among other elements, I will note page-by-page any character and plot difficulties, unclear motivations, poor story pacing, point of view shifts, and areas for improvement with style, structure, and voice. I will query you with suggestions to strengthen your story, meet genre requirements, and handle dialogue well. I will also suggest changes for continuity and clarity. Use this option when you've revised well and you are ready for help fixing any remaining story problems.

Copyediting

My copyediting services are divided into three levels: basic, moderate, and line editing. The correct level for you depends on the status of your work. Copy editing includes correcting grammar, syntax, and style problems as well as checking for remaining inconsistencies or incorrect formatting.
